My name is Brent Holt. I’m a born and bred Canadian, from the Port City of Saint John, New Brunswick.

From the time I could walk, I was on the water. Living on the East Coast has given me the luxury of having the water right in my backyard…literally.  Over the years, my family and I have enjoyed the beautiful Saint John River system, many boating excursions, as well as taking cruises to tropical islands.

My Dad has been an avid sailor his whole life. He has spent most of his life racing locally, nationally and internationally, as well as spending leisure time sailing with family and friends. In the summer, if he wasn’t at work you'd find him at the local yacht club on our family boat.

And here’s where we get to the point of my story.

Things have drastically changed for my family over the past few years.   

My Dad has been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s at age 58.  His diagnosis has taken a toll on everyone in our family.  My Dad was always the foundation of our family. When we found out, we were devastated. Major life adjustments were made.

I discovered surfing a few years ago and used this as my outlet since my Dad's diagnosis. It has let me cope with my Dad’s debilitating disease, and helps me deal with the fact that he wasn’t going to be same anymore. And there’s nothing as peaceful as sitting out on the water and watching the sun and the waves rise.

One day, as I was out on the water, waiting for the next wave to break, it hit me: What can I do to help other families that are going through the same thing?

And that’s when the idea for Palms & Tropics was born.

This clothing brand is near and dear to my heart. It’s a tribute to my Dad and to his way of living, which inspired me and made me who I am today. While it will never ease the pain of watching my Dad suffer under the unrelenting grip of Alzheimer’s, I hope that in some way I can help other people and families who are going through the same thing. Therefore, for every piece of clothing sold, I will be donating a portion of sales to fighting Alzheimer’s.
